The release of Fantasia 80 years ago, in 1940, was a turning point for Mickey Mouse. After his popularity declined, Walt Disney wanted to reimagine his most iconic character with an updated look and a starring role in a bold experiment in animation.
In addition to revitalising Mickey Mouse's career, Fantasia was revolutionary in many other ways, such as the use of Fantasound, which provided surround sound to transport audiences to another world, and the meticulous synchronisation of the animations with classical music, which paved the way for the modern music video.
