Relive history with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad
The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O) was the first public railroad in the United States and one of the most iconic of its time, operating from 1830 to 1987. After merging with the Chessie System, its lines are now managed by CSX Transportation.
Founded to connect Baltimore merchants with settlers in the Appalachians, the B&O played a key role in American history, especially during the Civil War, as its owners were Union sympathizers who supported the North's efforts.
Known for its technological advances, the B&O pioneered the operation of steam locomotives and the construction of historic railroad infrastructure. Its passenger trains were also renowned for their prestige and luxury. In addition, the railroad achieved cultural icon status as one of the four railroads featured in the original version of the Monopoly board game.
