Cinnabar is a mineral belonging to the sulfide group and is composed of approximately 85% mercury and 15% sulfur.
The crystals that make it up are usually scarce and striking, with well-developed triangular faces and a vitreous luster in bright red tones that make the crystalline specimens of this mineral highly prized by collectors. Cinnabar is the main and practically the only source of mercury in the world.
Almadén, a Spanish town in Ciudad Rea, is one of the largest sources of cinnabar in existence, with more than 2,000 years of uninterrupted mercury production.
