Pyromorphite is a mineral in class 8 of the phosphate minerals according to the Strunz classification, and within this class it belongs to the so-called "apatite group". It was discovered in 1813 in Zschopau, in the state of Saxony (Germany), and was named by the mineralogist J.F.L. Hausmann from the Greek piros (fire) and morphos (form), in reference to the shape it takes when the molten mineral recrystallizes. It can form very attractive specimens, which are highly prized in museums and collections. In Spain, very notable specimens were found in large quantities in the mines of El Horcajo, in Almodóvar del Campo (Ciudad Real), during their period of exploitation in the 19th century.
