Aragonite is formed from hot springs or geysers, filtered water that has come into contact with very hot rocks located at great depths and has re-emerged to the surface. These waters dissolve minerals from the rocks as they pass through, including calcium.
As the hot springs evaporate, the calcium they contain precipitates and, when it comes into contact with the air, combines with oxygen and carbon dioxide to form Aragonite crystals.
The name Aragonite was given by German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1788. He discovered it from specimens from Molina de Aragón (Guadalajara), and Werner called it Aragonite.
