Pieter Brueghel, known as the Elder (Breda, 1525 - Brussels, September 5 or 9, 1569) was a Brabant painter and engraver. Founder of the Brueghel dynasty of painters, he is considered one of the great masters of the 16th century and the most important Dutch painter of that century. Along with Jan Van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch, and Peter Paul Rubens, he is considered one of the four great figures of Flemish painting.
