Australian coin from the "Bush Babies" series.
A series of commemorative coins from Australia dedicated to the young of the country's most charismatic animals.
This series features sugar glider, koala, kangaroo, bilby, and dingo pups.
On this coin, minted by the prestigious Perth Mint, we see the sugar glider alongside a dragonfly. On the reverse side is Queen Elizabeth II. The sugar glider is a marsupial mammal native to Australia, New Guinea, and Tasmania. Its scientific name is Petaurus Breviceps, and it is better known as the sugar glider. Sugar gliders are gliding animals, very similar to flying squirrels. They have short heads with pointed, pink snouts, large eyes, and ears. Their tails are almost as long as their bodies and are covered with thick fur.
