East Berlin came under the administration of the Soviet Union from the end of World War II in 1945, later becoming the capital of the German Democratic Republic.

In early April 1945, Red Army troops reached about 60 kilometers east of Berlin.

On April 16, 1945, Soviet troops launched the strategic operation in Berlin, and by April 25 the city was completely surrounded by Soviet forces and the Polish Army.
The offensive against the capital of Nazi Germany began on all sides.

By April 28 only the center of the city remained in the hands of the defenders and was harassed by artillery fire from the Red Army. On April 30 the Soviet forces launched the attack against the German parliament (Reichstag), which lasted until May 2.
